Tom Carroll, Home Helpers, Named 2011 CBN Business Person of the Year
Thomas C. Carroll is a man who truly exemplifies the mission of the Catholic Business Network of Greater Philadelphia. He applies the principles of the Catholic faith in both his professional and his personal endeavors. Through his company, Home Helpers, Inc., Tom ensures the delivery of the highest quality of non-medical home care services to over 250 adults, most over the age of 60, throughout the Delaware Valley. Because of Tom and the 175 caregivers he employs, these seniors are able to manage their everyday lives and achieve their desire to age in their own homes rather than moving into nursing homes. Under Tom’s co-ownership during the past four years, Home Helpers has grown over 300%. Adding 50 new employees last year, his business was featured on CNNMoney.com as one of the top small businesses in the United States that are actually hiring.
Tom’s experience with Home Helpers is not his first foray into the helping professions. A licensed master’s degree-prepared social worker, he has more than 20 years of experience in his field, including expertise in the areas of child welfare, behavioral health, homecare and geriatrics. Prior to Home Helpers, he most recently worked for the Crozer Keystone Health System as a Trauma Social Worker and as the Triage Clinician for the health system’s Department of Senior Health Services. He obtained his BSW from Misericordia University and his master’s degree from the University of South Carolina.
In addition to his professional responsibilities with Home Helpers, Tom’s personal activities also attest to his dedication to the Catholic values of community service and charity. He volunteers his time to numerous organizations. He serves on the Board of Directors for Senior Community Services, a non-profit organization that provides supportive services to the elderly and their families. He is also a volunteer member of the Media Borough Board of Health, a position he has held for more than 10 years. Tom also is very active in the Alzheimer’s Association. He co-facilitates the association’s monthly Caregiver Support Group for family members struggling to cope with the disease. He is also a speaker for the association and has presented at numerous trainings and conferences. In 2009, he was honored with the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Caring Hearts – Helping Hands” award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. The award recognized Tom for his passionate dedication to helping those affected by Alzheimer ’s disease and the fact that he was a major force behind the Home Helpers contribution of over $10,000 to the Alzheimer’s Association as a Presenting Sponsor for its Annual Family Caregiver Conference.
Tom and his wife Kim live in Media, PA., with their two children, Megan and Tommy. Both children attend Nativity BVM School, and the family has been long-standing parishioners of the Nativity BVM Church. In his free time, Tom actively volunteers at the school, is a Nativity BVM lector and also has been Adorer for over 11 years for the parish's Perpetual Adoration Chapel.
