Knit Happens at Home Helpers for the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk
Media, Pa., November 16, 2010 - Home Helpers, an organization that provides non-medical companion caregiving services, spent the last few weeks knitting and crocheting 12” x 12” squares that would eventually become a blanket made out of a labor of love. The yarn for the squares had to be purple and white, but any designs were welcomed. Allison Rankin and Sharon Murphy from the Home Helpers Drexel Hill office then had the arduous task of sewing all the squares together. “I am so proud of the staff and caregivers that participated” said Michelle Brown, President of Home Helpers Drexel Hill. “The blanket turned out beautifully”.
The blanket was then displayed during the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk this past weekend at the Citizen’s Bank Park and participants entered a drawing to win. A free-willing donation was also collected and all proceeds were donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.
Sue Serio from Fox 29 did the honor of drawing the winners, John and Kathy Burke from Williamstown, NJ. “Participating in the Alzheimer's walk has grown within our families over the last few years. The ages of our group run from 59 to 4. You never forget a loved one after they pass, even more so if you were involved with their daily care” says Mr. Burke. “The walk returns us to our memories of those that have suffered from Alzheimer's. We have a sense that they are watching us from up above and are smiling their approval and support for our actions”.
“Not only did our staff knit, but our team raised over $2,000 from family and friends” said Tom Carroll, President of Home Helpers Pennsylvania Co-Op. “Several of our client’s are suffering from this debilitating disease and we will continue to support the Alzheimer’s Associations in finding a cure.”
